Book reviews:

Mike Bickle - 'Growing in the Prophetic'

Warren Hunter - 'God Working with God'
Review by Sandra Duffty

In these days of intimacy we are gaining more insight, revelation and understanding into the nature of God, this book will enlarge your understanding of the nature of God, His plan and Purpose and your place in the great scheme.

This is a book that I highly recommend, it will adjust your thinking and understanding of God and hopefully should empower further growth and harvest in your life.

I have included below a number of Quotes from the book to whet your appetite…..

"God works with His own word and with His own nature and character. God plants himself within you so that He has something of Himself to work with."

"There is no talent; gift or ability that any human has that will impress God, because he is only impressed with himself."

"God cannot work with anything outside of his nature and character. When he looks at us he is searching for something of himself within us that he can work with."

"When God sows a seed in us, he has an expectation, that he will reap a harvest.

Is 55:10-11 "as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it might give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth, it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

"Essentially God is sowing himself... God working with God to reap a God harvest..."

"God is out to bring himself to pass… gods word is his resume, his vision, purpose and will. God works everything out in conformity to his will because his will and his word are one."

What word do you have...? Invite the Holy Spirit to breathe upon you and that word to bring it to pass

The word knows its destiny, yet without a willing heart to accept it and yield to it, the seed remains dormant and untapped. Once one person says "be it unto me according to your word" that seed will burrow deep into the inner man of that individual; it will begin to take on flesh, manifesting the fulfillment of god’s word in accordance to the individual’s ability to yield to it.

Yield to the word and ask the spirit to brood over it."

"Gods desire is to be completely exposed and open with us his bride, the church; the only way he can do that is if the church is perfectly reflecting God to himself. God comes only into intimate relationship with himself, because it is only God in intimate contact with himself that will produce God."

In reading this book I have been so challenged by our inbuilt desire to make everything about man, often creating a man centred gospel, when all the time the purpose of God is to glorify God for ever, He has called us to be partakers of that purpose and calling.

Mike Bickle - 'Growing in the Prophetic'

Mike Bickle - 'Growing in the Prophetic'
Review by Helen Moses

In this helpful and insightful book, Mike Bickle openly shares his journey as a pastoral church leader working alongside strongly gifted prophetic ministries. With frank integrity, he tells the story of amazing revelations encountered and then the painful lessons learned during the following time of testing and criticism.

Mike honours the prophetic gift whilst providing a Godly framework for its use in the body of Christ. He emphasises the need for grace, humility, unity and good leadership. His helpful distinction between strong gifting and maturity of character is supported by practical examples of discipling those with dramatic gifts and helping them to use these gifts appropriately and find their place alongside other ministries in the church. Issues such as “false prophets”, the pressure to speak even when God is silent, the prophetic call, heart motivation and use of prophecy in public worship are explored. The chapter on “Revelation, interpretation and application” is particularly helpful.

This book is full of applied wisdom born out of biblical knowledge and practical experience. It is a must read for anyone wanting to develop their own prophetic gift or have a greater understanding of the prophetic and how it can operate effectively to build up the body of Christ.

Mike Bickle - 'Growing in the Prophetic'

Mike Bickle - 'Passion for Jesus'
Review by Helen Moses

At a time when God is calling his people to greater intimacy with himself, this is an inspiring read.

The book explores the truth about God’s nature and character and how we can experience deep affection and passion for him. Our view of God as father and how we believe he sees us will determine our emotional well- being and deeply affect our spiritual journey in terms of responding to him and relating to others.

Mike explains how God draws us to himself, revealing incomparable and unconditional love for us. He then empowers us to express this love to others and draw them closer to God.

Dealing with strong holds of the mind and bringing insightful teaching from a study of “Song of Songs”, Mike shows how our journey as lovers of God brings us to maturity as we experience and are transformed by the “Blessings of Intimacy”. Being prepared for coming revival is one such blessing as God transforms us into his likeness and motivates and enables us to reach out to others.

Prophetic by its content, “Passion for Jesus” will inspire you to draw near to God, experience his love, and feel his heart-beat for the church and the world.

Jim W Goll - 'The Seer - The Prophetic Power of Visions, Dreams and Open Heavens'

Jim W Goll - 'The Seer - The Prophetic Power of Visions, Dreams and Open Heavens'
Review by Sandra Duffty

The Seer by Jim Goll is an excellent guide for the Body of Christ on the gift of the Seer amongst the prophetic community of God’s people.

I recommend this book to all who have a desire to move deeper into the prophetic realm and explore the depths and heights of God. The book is grounded in the word and carries a balance whilst still seeking to extend the boundaries.

“Jim couples breathtaking revelation, with wisdom, piercing insight, high spirituality with balance and accountability, new knowledge and understanding with exciting mystical experience.” John Sandford – Elijah House International.

Through this book we see that there are various prophetic types and styles, each one unique and each adding in their seeing and revelation to the whole picture of Christ and the body. This work may help you to identify and gain insight into the leading of God in your own life and ministry.

“The Holy Spirit will help us and liberate us to be unique and varied expressions of His wonderful prophetic presence and yet walk circumspectly with integrity within the church. God has never been in a box, we are the ones in boxes, it is time to take the lid off ….”

Jim outlines a strong emphasis on accountability, which is essential if we are to flow in this realm and below are five basic questions he outlines that we should regularly ask ourselves:-

1. Am I regularly studying the scriptures? 2. Am I maintaining a life of prayer? 3. Am I seeking purity, cleansing, and holiness in my life? 4. Am I a worshipful member of a local congregation? 5. Am I committed to a few peer relationships that can speak into my life?

God is looking for a people who will be intimate with Him, a people with whom He can share His secrets, a prophetic people who will bring about His purpose in the earth. This book is a tool to assist you in your journey of living a prophetic life.

John Crowder - 'Miracle Workers, Reformers and The New Mystics'

John Crowder - 'Miracle Workers, Reformers and The New Mystics'
Review by Sandra Duffty

I want to highly recommend this book, “Miracle Workers, Reformers and The New Mystics” by John Crowder, published by Destiny Image in 2006. In this book you will learn How to become part of The Supernatural Generation.

In it you will discover the lives of William Branham, William Seymour, Aimee Semple McPherson, George Whitfield, Sundar Singh, Brother Lawrence, Charles Finney and so many more…

If you are hungry for more of God, for a depth of seeing, touching and handling the things of the Kingdom, for your passion to be fuelled and your desire to see the Kingdom come with power and signs in our day, then do not miss this.

John Crowder unfolds the workings of God in mankind throughout history, highlighting men and women who chose not to be settlers but those who embraced their sonship with all its challenges and lived a life of sign and wonder and abundance.

He charts the working of the spirit through the generations, and in so doing stirs up a faith for today, as we, together with those who have gone on before, pick up our baton and finish our race, that together we might all receive the prize.

Many radicals are highlighted. Today God is looking for radicals, those who are so in love with the Christ and are ready to pursue the Kingdom with all they have within them.

I leave you with a number of quotes to whet your appetite…

“He is not looking for perfection he is looking for relationship.”

“Sometimes our greatest sin is settling for a mundane life…and not stepping out into the unknown. God is looking for courageous pioneers. He would rather us step out in faith than sit on the sidelines, afraid of operating in presumption.”

“An active and living faith will always be marked by paradigm shifts, in which our existing framework of faith is constantly challenged. No true progress can be attained without opposition – we have to swim against streams. Only living fish swim against the current…”

“Keith Green said… he always liked it when his picture of God was turned upside down. That is the only way our vision can grow. Unless the idol of our tiny perspective of Jesus is laid on the altar, there is never room for the real Jesus to enter the room.”

“Anyone who is called to pursue a life of abandoned devotion to God must be prepared to have their understanding of Him totally wrecked.”

“Our perception and the way we experience God can become a thing of idolatry at times, and He has to break our shadowy concepts and inner experience of Him in order to take us to a higher level.”

“It is almost guaranteed that while we are being broken, we will not be able to see or comprehend the new level of glory to which we are being taken, until we get there.”

I trust this is enough to make you hungry…
